Derby edging closer to a deal for Aston Villa forward

After being told he is surplus to requirements by Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood, Andreas Weimann has emerged as a target for Paul Clement’s Derby County with a deal reportedly close to being struck.

Since his appointment back in February, Villa manager Sherwood has sparsely used the Austrian international and has now told the player he is free to leave Villa Park.

Weimann has been with the Birmingham-based club since 2007 when he was signed from Austrian side Rapid Vienna and has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the Villans.

A versatile player who can play on either wing, up front, or just behind a lone striker, the 23 year-old has struggled to recapture the form of his breakthrough season with Villa when he scored 12 goals in 38 appearances back in 2012/13.

This season, the former Watford-loanee has only managed to net four times in 33 games in all competitions; form which has seemingly led to the end of his spell at Villa.

Highly rated at international level, Weimann came through the Austrian international youth levels and was prolific at both U17 and U21 levels before being promoted to the senior squad; scoring five in six, and six in ten, respectively.
