How To Win At Wembley Against Arsenal

I thought we could do a quick guide for certain teams who can’t win at Wembley against Arsenal.

Turn up and have a plan.

Blues were brilliant in 2011, winning every challenge and following the tactical advice of Alex McLeish, who, for all his flaws, got that day perfect. We hit Zigic early, let him get us up the pitch and crossed the ball towards him when we could. Playing without a plan, and not bothering to turn up will generally make it more difficult to win the game.

Have a shot.

It’s much easier to score a goal if you have a shot on target. Blues had 7 shots on target in 2011, which resulted in two goals. Villa today had no shots on target, which makes it a lot harder to score goals. There is a positive correlation between attempts on target and goals, so to beat Arsenal it helps to have a shot now and again.

Try defending.

It’s difficult to win a game if you let your opponents score four goals, so putting in tackles, intercepting and generally not leaving their centre forward open 4 yards from goal will give you a good base to work from. Jiranek and Johnson were brilliant that day.

Have a striker who wins headers, holds the ball up and marks the opposition centre-halves.

Nikola Zigic was unbelievable at Wembley – scored with one header, won the header for the second and should have had an assist in the first 10 minutes when Bowyer was wrongly given offside. Benteke didn’t win a header all day and generally wasn’t Zigic; which is a big problem, when you need to beat Arsenal at Wembley.
