Cook Looking For Right Ingredients

Portsmouth manager Paul Cook has revealed that he is looking for quality over quantity as he rebuilds the squad for a promotion push.

Cook has already released nine players, including recent Oxford signing Ryan Taylor, as he looks to strengthen the South Coast side following a disappointing sixteenth place finish last season.

The former Chesterfield manager has already brought wingers Kyle Bennett and Kal Naismith to Fratton Park but the club have had a bid for Gary Roberts turned down.

Cook has today spoken of the type of squad he wants as he plots to bring success to the 2008 FA Cup winners. He told the Portsmouth News:

“I like working with a small squad. Getting in quality, rather than a quantity of numbers, is important to me. Our fans can relax safe in the knowledge that we will only sign players who desperately want to sign for this club.”

While Pompey has released nine players, leaving just fifteen contracted to the club, players such as Craig Westcarr and Danny Hollands are believed to be under pressure to impress. Jimmy Ryan is also being pursued by Cook but no new deals are expected to be completed this weekend.
