Lawson D’Ath: Rising star of Northampton Town

Lawson D’Ath has been the surprise package of Chris Wilder’s League 2 outfit this season with a highly impressive 9 goals from midfield. Released from Reading in the summer, D’Ath spent pre-season on trial at Northampton before earning a six-month contract after impressing Wilder in the club’s friendly matches. The signing was by no means a marquee one however, when he came off the bench to score two goals on his debut against a championship Wolverhampton side in what was one of the biggest cup shocks of the season, D’Ath instantly became a fans favourite amongst the Cobbler’s faithful.

From this point on D’Ath was still a bit part player, making 10 appearances from the bench and rarely getting an opportunity in the starting line up. Although, with the dip in form of wide players Kaid Mohammed and Chris Hackett, he was given his chance at the turn of the year and he took it with both hands. The introduction to the team of Ricky Holmes catapulted D’Ath into unrivalled form as he scored 5 goals in a single month, two coming in the emphatic 5-1 away win to Accrington, and since then he has been almost ever-present in the starting eleven.

With a full pre-season behind him, without the added pressure of playing to earn himself a contract, Cobbler’s fans will be hoping that next year, Lawson D’Ath can perform at an even higher level and help them towards a promotion winning season, a feat he’ll certainly be setting his sights on.
