What do Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Peter Bonetti, Eusébio, Johan Cruyff and George Best have in common? Well, apart from the fact that none of them ever pulled on the famous white of my beloved Leeds United, they all appeared in the pre-MLS era in America as they played out their socce…wait football careers. Recently, in the current MLS era, players like Thierry Henry, David Beckham, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard will all saw out/willsee out the twighlight of their careers playing for $US instead of £UK in a sport called ‘soccer’ over in the states because, well ‘football’ is a whole different ball game over the pond.
Whilst there have been ‘big name’ players over the water, there are currently lesser-known ‘names’ plying their trade on American shores in today’s MLS, players who have pulled on the shirts of one of the current 72 Football League sides.
