Derby County: Steve McClaren sacked – a timeline of demise

May 21 2015

On the May 21 , according to the Daily Telegraph, Derby County announced that the club were parting company with manager Steve McClaren after failing to guide Derby to the Premier League and for ‘flirting’ with Newcastle United. The former England boss was summoned by the club for talks with chief executive Sam Rush and newly-incoming chairman Mel Morris with his exit from the club expected to be announced in the near future with the ubiquitous ‘by mutual consent’ phrase being bandied around as the likely outcome.

McClaren, it was said, paid the ultimate price for a spectacular collapse that saw Derby Return only two wins from their final dozen games as they missed out on the Championship play-offs on the final day of the season. Further to this, McClaren, raised anger amongst some pockets of fans for failing to distance himself from the Newcastle job after they [Newcastle] made an approach for his services in January. Paul Clement, currently Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at at Real Madrid, is rumoured to be the favoured man to step into McClaren’s shoes at the iPro Stadium should his dismissal be confirmed

Fan opinion on Big Steve’s sacking is divided somewhat on Twitter,

Reports emerged on May 25, via Sky Sports, that McClaren’s days at the iPro Stadium were “definitely over” amidst reports that the former England manager is refusing to leave Derby without collecting some “significant compensation.” Sky Sports News HQ reporter Rob Dorsett says that these meetings are “to thrash out an exit strategy, compensation, the terms of McClaren’s departure.” McClaren himself is thought to have wanted to continue at the club, his view being that he was only two years into a five year plan. Sky Sports also reported that talks were due to continue throughout Bank Holiday Monday (25 May) in efforts to come to a solution mutually agreeable to both sides. Exhaustive talks between the two camps are expected to continue for a number of hours but Dorsett himself says quite unequivocally that “What’s clear is that McClaren has no future at Derby.”

With this Tweet, and rather unfortunate choice of picture to be fair, Derby County announced that they had terminated the contract of head coach Steve McClaren. The Official website announced the news in conjunction with the Tweeted announcement saying,

“The decision follows a thorough review of the 2014/15 season by the club’s Board of Directors. The Board believes that the appointment of a new Head Coach is required to continue the club’s on-field progress and the search is now underway to appoint a successor. The Board remains firmly committed and driven to achieving promotion to the Premier League. The club would also like to take this opportunity to wish Steve McClaren well for the future and thank him for his work throughout his tenure, which included a Play-Off Final appearance in 2014. The club will be making no further comment at this time.”

With the club’s ‘no comment’ stance, any other further details will be released through the usual press channels. This is one of those cases where there is more than meets the eye and it will be interesting to see how this develops from here.
