Is it a good time for Ginnelly to move on?

Town youngster Josh Ginnelly has attracted attention from multiple clubs recently, the youngster’s agent has told manager Micky Mellon that Ginnelly wants to move on. Ginnelly came through the Aston Villa youth system and was picked up by Town in 2013 on a two-year scholarship, so Ginnelly might see Town as a stepping stone in his career. A few months ago Mellon spoke to the press about the Ginnelly situation, he said that there is nothing he can do if the player is set on moving on and he wants the best for the player’s development. The strange thing about the Ginnelly situation is that he hasn’t exactly proved himself in the first team; he has been one of the best youth players but has only accumulated thirty-two minutes of first team football this season.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Mellon has used Woods and Goldson to try and convince Ginnelly to stay at the club, Woods and Goldson are both players that have turned down big moves in the interest in their development. Ginnelly will not slip straight into a first team, especially the teams that are rumoured to be interested in the youngster. Ginnelly will have to player more u-21 football or be loaned out to lower league clubs to gain experience; it seems pointless to make a move now when he has not even got into the first team. If Ginnelly does not see a future at Shrewsbury Town that is fair enough, but every player does everything in the interest of their development and staying at Town for another season will not do any harm. Also if clubs see Ginnelly performing with the first team, the price tag will be bigger.

The two north-east rival Newcastle and Sunderland have both shown interest in Ginnelly, midland clubs Stoke City and Wolves are also vying for Ginnelly’s signature. Earlier on in the season Scottish giants Celtic were linked with him, Sheffield United have also found themselves caught up on the Ginnelly band-wagon. Also this transfer speculation will only make Ginnelly want to leave the club, you can’t fault the player if he thinks that he can further his development at a bigger club, hopefully Ginnelly makes the right decision and we see him perform at the top levels one day.
