OPINION: One step away from a return to Division 1

After far too many seasons underachieiving in Division 2 we are now one game away from promotion. Our defeat away to our bogey team, Morecambe, in the final game of the season meant that Bury pipped us to the final automatic spot. Having comfortably beaten Stevenage 4-2 on aggregrate in our semi-final we now have Wycombe between us and Division 1.

Our team is set out to be hard to beat. Grinding out one goal victories our forte. A rock solid defence featuring two Divisonal XI players, the outstanding young keeper Daniel Bentley and the marauding left back Ben Coker, is testament to that fact. The midfield quartet of Timlin, Leonard, Worrall and Atkinson is very strong with the likes of McLaughlin, Weston and Deegan waiting in the wings. But we still rely too heavily on Barry Corr to score our goals as our loan signings, Cassidy and Piggott, have been far too inconsistent. One god send in recent weeks has been that our subs bench has been very strong featuring game changing players, who earlier in the season were first team regulars.

Next Saturday twenty plus thousand Southend supporters will make the relatively short journey to Wembley. Both sides still smarting that they didn’t gain promotion automatically. But one side will come away with a win and having had an enjoyable day out. The other gutted and their weekend ruined, resigned to another season in Division 2 and reflecting on points lost throughout the season.
