Terry Butcher appointed as Newport manager

Ex-England international Terry Butcher has been announced as Newport County AFC manager on a two year contract. He will replace Jimmy Dack who rejected extending his deal at Rodney Parade. The 56 year-old has gained managerial experience from clubs such as Coventry City, Sunderland, Motherwell, Sydney FC, Brentford, Inverness and Hibernian.

After a successful spell as caretaker manager Jimmy Dack declined the opportunity to take over a permanent role at Rodney Parade and Butcher was given the job after a successful interview. Dack is likely to rejoin Justin Edinburgh, his former boss, at Gillingham where Edinburgh moved in January. Dack stayed at County for the remainder of the season but has made public his plans to go back to being an assistant manager.

With County awaiting their final home game of the season this Saturday Butcher is likely to be introduced to the Exile’s supporters. The 56 year-old was a key part of the England setup in the 1980’s including featuring in the team that lost in the 1986 World Cup to Argentina. Butcher was made famous for his physical game and played over 400 games in his 17 years of football; Singapore-born Butcher played for the likes of Ipswich, Rangers, Coventry and Clydebank.

Butcher has a good knowledge of the lower leagues in England, when in charge of Inverness Butcher spotted Gary Warren and added him to his side. Warren has since gone on to be a leading figure in ICT’s recent success. He will have a summer to work and build on the current Newport County side who have enjoyed a good season, just missing out on a play-off spot.
