John Fleck admits players didn’t turn up

Coventry midfielder John Fleck has admitted that five or six players weren’t on form when it mattered at the weekend, according to the Coventry Telegraph.

The Sky Blues needed just a point to secure safety but ended up falling to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers, Crewe Alexandra. It leaves them still needing a point in their last game against Crawley on Sunday.

Fleck, who is the current squad’s longest serving player – could not believe the performance, especially because a week earlier they had played superbly against league leaders Bristol City. Asked about the game, Fleck said:

“I don’t know. I think consistency has been a problem all season, playing well against the best team in the league where we probably should have got three points and then against Crewe we couldn’t get enough decent shots on target – going wide and being blocked – and it was one of those days where maybe five or six of us didn’t turn up.”

It leaves the club in what could be a precarious situation – they are currently 18th and face Crawley who are sat in 21st place. If Crawley can beat them in the final game of the season, then Coventry could very well end up waving goodbye to League 1. Win or draw and they will stay up.

Asked if complacency perhaps crept in after the game against Bristol City, Fleck said:

“I don’t think so. I thought we all worked hard but just our final pass or when to make runs and when not to make runs wasn’t really on.”

It will prove to be an interesting final day in League 1 – not only will there be a battle for automatic promotion at the top of the table but there will be a battle to survive at the bottom of the league as well.
