Blues 1-0 Charlton – Talking Points

Another victory thanks to a late goal, but this game was very different to Wednesday’s.

Blues dominated and should really have won by far more than they actually did. It is refreshing, however, to see that we can win games that contrast wildly to each other, and that we are now a bit more flexible.

1. Next Year’s Expectations.

Charlton are not a bad side – far from it, and are a midtable side around the same area that Blues are, so beating them proves that maybe we can go a step further next year. Not just the result, but the manner of it; we weren’t lucky to beat them and really it was the Addicks who maybe got a slice of luck.

However, this must be taken with a pinch of salt – Charlton had very little to play for and may not have been at 100% capacity, but that shouldn’t necessarily detract from the performance. If we can continue that form and style into next year, then the play-offs are maybe not the impossible dream they once seemed.

2. Nikola Zigic

It took everyone by surprise to hear about Zigic’s choice not to make a cameo appearance, but it was a nice touch by him to respect the players who have been playing so well. I think I speak for a lot of Blues fans when I say it’s sad to see the back of the Serbian giant, a cult hero and the last of the players who played in the Cup final, but I think we and he all knew it was time for him to move on.

Sentimentally I’d love to see him stay on as a coach or in some way involved, but I’m not sure it’s the best fit for him or the club. Good luck to him in whatever he chooses to do.

3. Lloyd Dyer

I haven’t understood quite why Dyer has had the negative reaction he’s had from Blues fans. He’s not set the world alight, but he’s extremely quick, works hard defensively as well as going forward and today has shown his quality with a great goal to win the game. I’m not sure what some expected from him.

If we can get him to accept a lower wage than what he is rumoured to be on at Watford (£12,000 p/w) then it might be worth trying to sign him permanently, as he is a dangerous player in the late stages of games and a great asset to have.

4. Could Watford’s promotion allow us to sign Fabbrini?

Despite missing a glorious opportunity in the first half, Fabbrini was instrumental in helping Blues dictate the game and his presence in the team has correlated with fantastic results. With him not being first choice at Watford, and them going up to the Premier League, it could mean that Fabbrini would be free to leave.

Fabbrini would be a wonderful signing and an exciting one too – here’s hoping.

Next season could be a very interesting, exciting one; there’s never a dull moment at Blues! Whatever happens, it’ll be a rollercoaster but I have a sneaky suspicion we could be challenging for a play-off spot – but maybe that is too optimistic.
