Chesterfield reject Portsmouth approach for Paul Cook

After rumours quickly dispersed across social media, Chesterfield have confirmed that Portsmouth Football Club called Spireites chief executive Chris Turner on Thursday evening, asking if they could talk to manager Paul Cook about the vacant manager’s position at Fratton Park. The club has announced that Pompey have been denied a chance to speak with the increasingly popular Liverpudlian.

Turner said: “I received a phone call from Portsmouth, asking for permission to speak to Paul Cook, which I turned down. We are trying to win promotion to the Championship via the play-offs and we will do all we can to keep Paul at the club. Paul has been informed of the situation.”

This attempt to approach Cook has angered Chesterfield fans, being seen as poor timing considering the possibility of promotion still on the cards for the North Derbyshire club. All associated with the club can only hope that this event will not stir the atmosphere in the dressing room and distract the players from the main goal: promotion.
