Magpies planning a move for Latics leading scorer

Reports from the Derry Journal suggest that Newcastle United are keen to pursue a transfer in the region of £4 million for Wigan Athletic winger James McClean.

With Newcastle’s dreadful end of season form which has seen them win just two games in 2015 since the departure of Alan Pardew, they will undoubtedly be looking to inject fresh faces into their squad.

A dismal season for the Latics sees them all but relegated, with the only permutation of them staying up being Rotherham losing their three remaining games, and Wigan winning their last two.

McClean will be far from content with playing in League 1 with the quality he possesses having already proved himself in the Premier League, tallying 11 goals in England top division in two seasons with Sunderland between 2011 and 2013.

The 25 year-old moved to the DW Stadium for just £1 million in the summer of 2013, and currently sits atop Wigan’s scoring and assisting charts – with six in each category.

A move to Newcastle would certainly put a strain on his relationship with Sunderland due to the renowned rivalry, but the Republic of Ireland international will be focusing on the remaining games for Wigan before deciding his future.
