Birmingham City 2 -1 Wolverhampton Wanderers – Report and Ratings

Birmingham edged a closely contested West Midlands Derby at St Andrews thanks to Demarai Gray’s superb solo goal.

A crowd of above 19,000, including 4000 travelling fans, witnessed a shock result on Saturday as the Blues came from a goal down to triumph over their local rivals.

Wolves took the lead on 21 minutes when Dicko was allowed to dribble the ball into the box after a half hearted challenge from Rob Kieran couldn’t dispossess him, he then pulled the ball back to an unmarked Benik Afobe who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net, sending the travelling fans into raptures.

The Wolves fans were then silenced when a corner fell to Jonathan Grounds, his effort was cleared off the line, though replays show the ball had in fact crossed the line, however the clearance fell to Rob Kiernan who erased any doubt as the ball was slammed off him into the back of the net.

An opening tight and hard fought game had quickly transformed into an open end to end game with both teams having chances.

Wolves came out the second half the stronger of the two teams but the Blues defence remained stubborn and limited the the visitors to many shots on goal. However, Wolves’ pressure counted for nothing as the ball fell to Gray in his own area and after sprinting for a full 80 yards, it appeared he had lost out to Scott Golbourne when he over hit the ball, but Gray didn’t give up and the 18 year old muscled Golbourne off the ball to leave himself one on one. Gray kept a cool head as he slotted the ball past Ikeme to give the Blues the lead, a superb solo goal from the youngster.

The Blues comfortably saw out the end of the game and mathematically secured their Championship status for next season. Wolves would of seen this as a great opportunity missed with Derby and Brentford drawing.
