Match Preview: Sheffield United v Doncaster Rovers

Sheff DonnyAn early kick off on Saturday saw Sheffield United take the spoils over Barnsley in their highly anticipated South Yorkshire derby. With Steven Davies scoring his first goal in a Blades shirt and on loan Jason Holt bagging his third goal in three games for the Blades. This gave Nigel Clough and his hard working team a big confidence boost going into their last six fixtures of this campaign. Andy Garner who was on media duties for the Blades told BBC Radio Sheffield,

I thought the lads were superb today. That result was absolutely deserved.”

Our attention now turns to Tuesday night, where Doncaster Rovers play hosts at Bramall Lane. The two South Yorkshire clubs met previously this season in November where the Blades managed to pick up their 5th away win of the season. That encounter was won 1-0 by Sheffield United. The supporters were treated to a wonderfully struck goal from 25 yards out by Jamie Murphy. Coming into this game, Sheffield United have picked up 11 points out of their last six matches. The inconsistency comes at home for the Blades. The side have managed to get seven points out of a possible 18, which is regarded as totally unacceptable for a side that is looking to get promotion to the Championship. Clough’s men are lying in 5th position with 64 points in total. They are 7 points clear of 7th place Bradford City, who have got a game in hand over the Blades.

Doncaster Rovers will still feel that a play off position is still in reach for them, with the League One top half being so tight in points difference. A win on Tuesday night is a must for them if they want to keep their chances alive. Relegated from the Championship last season, Rovers will be looking to bounce back and return there with no issues. Dickov’s men will have to do it the hard way and aim to win all of their last six matches that they still have to play. Rovers had a bit of a setback on their bid to get promotion on Good Friday, where they were outclassed by a in form Bradford City at the Keepmoat Stadium. Their last three matches at Bramall Lane when playing against the Blades have ended in three draws.

LAST TIME OUT: Sheffield United (v Barnsley) Howard, Freeman, Kennedy, Brayford, Harris, Coutts, Basham, Holt, Davies, Murphy, Flynn. Doncaster Rovers (v Bradford City) Bywater, Wabara, McCullough, Butler, Stevens, Coppinger, Furman, Wellens, Forrester, Main, Clarke-Harris.

Stefan Scougall could be set to return to the starting XI after coming back from a knee injury. He also came off from the bench deep into injury time on Saturday. Jose Baxter and Michael Doyle are also pushing for recall’s. For Doncaster Rovers, Kyle Bennett and Nathan Tyson are two players that could be handed starts. Both players came off the bench against the Bantams on Good Friday.
