Was it a Good Friday for Argyle?

Good Friday saw Plymouth Argyle take on League 2 leaders Burton Albion at Home Park. This was the first game of a potentially tough Easter period for the Pilgrims with an away trip to Portsmouth next on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Green Army would have woken up on Friday morning dreaming of taking 3 points after last weeks away win combined with yet another clean sheet.  The Pilgrim’s fans would have also had one eye on the results of their play-off rivals and in a strange turn of events, even found themselves cheering their rivals Exeter.

The game saw Burton Albion score in the first half with a fortunate goal. Kevin Stewart, on loan from Liverpool, saw his shot take a deflection off Argyle defender Carl McHugh and lobbed Pilgrims keeper Luke McCormick. Argyle have struggled to win from losing positions this season, so any fan could have been forgiven for thinking that goal meant game over. Argyle fought back and they were rewarded with an equalising goal from defender Carl McHugh.  Bobby Reid’s corner was headed into the net with four minutes remains by McHugh for his first goal of the season.

Following the final whistle, Argyle fans will have been pleased to take a point from the game.  This point looked better to Argyle fans once they had seen the results in the games involving their play-off rivals in League 2.

Good Friday results saw all the teams occupying a play-off spot remain in the same position as they were at 3pm.  Bury and Southend were the only teams in the play-offs to pick up maximum points on Friday. Newport salvaged a draw at home to in-form Hartlepool United to keep their play-off hopes alive.

Argyle fans will be hoping John Sheridan’s men can build on this good point against the league leaders with 3 points away to Portsmouth. If the Pilgrims can get maximum points on Monday it will have been a good Easter Period for the Green Army.
