Cherries youngster eyes Premiership football after penning a new contract

Young defender Jake McCarthy has been rewarded for his glowing potential and has secured a 2-year-contract with the Dorset based club.

McCarthy, who received his first professional contract in the summer, was quick to impress manager Eddie Howe in the development squad. Following impressive performances, Howe was keen to tie down the defender to a longer contract.

The manager was full of praise for the 18 year-old, saying: “He definitely has something about him. He very much fits the bill in terms of our profile. If he can keep that mentality and keep progressing, I think he can go on to do well.”

Signed at the age of 12, McCarthy has come through the ranks at Bournemouth and has commented on the rapid success of the club: “I’ve been here since the club were in League 1, and now they’re sitting top of the Championship. Obviously they did well last season, but I never thought I’d be here talking about possibly getting into the Premier League.”

The Premier League is looking more and more likely for the Cherries, as they sit top of the table with six games left to play.
