Rotherham United vs Huddersfield Town – 3 things learned about the Millers

1) Kari Arnason is a quality midfielder.

Since his arrival at Rotherham United, Arnason’s alternated between playing at centre-back and centre-midfield, putting in some excellent (and some not so excellent) performances at both. However, if today’s game confirmed anything, it’s that his position – at least for the rest of the season – should be in midfield. He’s calm on the ball, is strong in the air, and has an excellent range of passing to complement his natural defensive abilities. The main problem Arnason had playing at the back was his lack of pace, which should serve to be less of a problem in midfield where he won’t be needed to defend through balls aimed at pacy strikers. Unfortunately for Arnason, Central midfield may be Rotherham’s strongest position. Richard Smallwood is essentially undroppable due to his constant incredible performances from his preferred CDM role. Paul Green’s a proven Championship level midfielder who’s only drawback is his knack of missing headers from 6 yards out. Lee Frecklington’s been a starter with the club since League 2, and the fact that he was made captain today after his return from a lengthy injury shows the faith that manager Steve Evans has in him. It’s going to be tough for Arnason to convince Evans that he’d be better served starting in midfield than attack, but the game today may have helped his cause.
