Crewe Alexandra: The Football League’s La Masia

4 – Dean Ashton:

Ashton came through the Crewe academy and went on to play the bulk of his matches there. He played 138 times for Crewe and scored 52 goals for them. This form caught the attention of Norwich City where he scored seven goals in his first, and only, Premier League season at the club. He would return to the top tier with West Ham in 2006 and he would score 19 goals across 56 games in all competitions. but Ashton’s time with the Hammers was blighted by long term injuries and in 2009 he was forced to retire.

Dean Ashton is now just 31 years of age and it is a sad thought that he has not played football for nearly six years. There is no doubt that, had he stayed fit, Ashton would have added to his one England cap and became a very good Premier League striker. However his success is still something that Crewe should hold in high regard.
