Relegation threatened Wigan Athletic have signed winger Jermaine Pennant until the end of the season.
32-year-old Pennant has been training with the Latics this week and becomes Malky Mackay’s tenth signing. Pennant has previously played for Liverpool, Real Zaragoza and Portsmouth. The winger also had a spell at FC Pune City in the inaugural Indian Premier League championship earlier this season.
Athletic are currently second from bottom in the Championship with only two wins since Mackay took charge and are six points adrift of safety. Scotsman Mackay hopes that journeyman Pennant, who has 24 caps for England Under 21’s, can help the club stay up and told the official Wigan website:
“He’s got terrific experience and is hungry for a way back into the English scene. There were a number of clubs interested, so we are delighted we can now call upon him to help us. He’s brought a breath of fresh air to the place and we’ve been bowled over by his hunger and enthusiasm. I’m sure he’s going to be a great addition for us.”
Pennant will wear the number 15 shirt at his new club after the paperwork was completed following Friday’s 3-0 loss to Charlton.
