Championship Team of the Year 2014

Defence

WestwoodWe start with the man between the sticks and that position goes to Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiran Westwood. He may have only joined the league in the summer from Sunderland, however already this season he has picked up 11 shutouts from his 24 Championship appearances.

The right-back spot is taken by Bournemouth full-back and consistent performer Simon Francis. The former Charlton man missed just two league games throughout 2014 and provided no fewer than 14 assists alongside 2 goals. He has been a key member of the side that currently sit top of the Championship.

The first centre-back in the side is Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala. The Spaniard has played at the heart of the Boro defence which has 15 clean sheets across the year when Ayala has been in the side. This season he has been a regular in our Team of the Week and a major factor in Middlesbrough’s fine start to the season.

BerraAlongside Ayala is Ipswich defender Christophe Berra. The Scottish international has, like Francis, missed just two games this year and been a key player for the Tractor Boys. The defender has provided some key goals for Mick McCarthy, five already this season, and offers an experienced head in a relatively young defensive line.

At left-back is fellow Ipswich player Tyrone Mings. The defender has been the subject of much interest from several Premier League clubs including Arsenal if rumours are to be believed. Taking a look at his record this year can tell you why so many sides are interested in the 21 year old. With Aaron Cresswell moving on in the summer Mings has stepped up and fitted in with ease providing four assists from his 20 games this season.
