South Yorkshire Round-Up – 1/11/14

Sheffield United 0-1 Barnsley

It was Derby Day at Bramall Lane. Arguably, the result didn’t reflect the performance, but it is what it is. The Blades were on the front foot in the first half, but Barnsley did well defensively to keep Nigel Clough’s men out. A Jose Baxter free-kick was headed down by defender Craig Alcock. It looked to be going in but somehow, Barnsley stopper Ross Turnbull kept out the full-back’s header. Scotsman Jamie Murphy had a shot blocked brilliantly on the edge of the box by Dudgeon; a shot that could’ve gone in had it not been blocked.

Despite being the underdogs in the game so far, it was Barnsley who got what turned out to be the only goal of the match. James Bailey whipped in a corner, and poor defending from the Blades allowed Sam Winnall to head the ball into the corner of Howard’s net. It was all Blades though and Clough’s men had plenty of chances to score. An unmarked Marc McNulty headed over from 6 yards as United headed towards defeat at the hands of their local rivals.
