The72 Football League Weekend Awards: Week 9

YOUNG PLAYER OF THE WEEKEND: Alex Gilbey – Colchester United

180119620-1-_3001971 (1)Despite his side being on the losing side, it was a pretty good day for Alex Gilbey who’s shot set up the first goal before a 25-yard strike from the 19-year-old had the U’s level at half-time. He’s been a constant presence in the Essex side even at such a young age and has shown some real quality as a box-to-box midfielder.

It’s a shame his defence couldn’t help him out as a strong Preston side ran out 4-2 winners thanks to some excellent attacking play but Gilbey will hope he can build on this performance. He was briefly handed the captain’s armband in the summer, showing the club’s belief in him and he’s certainly one to keep an eye out for in the future.
