Could Wigan Athletic target ex-Birmingham City man from Sheffield United?

Mark Duffy is expected to move on from Sheffield united on a permanent basis this summer.

The attacking midfielder is out of contract at Bramall Lane and is set to become a free agent next month.

Duffy, who is 34 years old, could be a target for Championship side Wigan Athletic.

The veteran helped Sheffield United gain promotion to the Premier League last season but has spent this campaign out on loan at Stoke City and ADO Den Haag.

Duffy played under current Wigan boss Paul Cook at Chesterfield five years ago and could potentially be on their radar over the coming months.

The Latics will be eager to boost their squad this summer in preparation for next season and may target Duffy to add more experience and quality into their ranks.

He has racked up over 500 appearances in his career, scoring 62 goals along the way.

Duffy spent time as a youngster on the books at Liverpool and Wrexham before dropping into non-league with spells at Prescot Cables and Southport.

He got his Football League move to Morecambe in 2009 and has since gone onto play for the likes of Scunthorpe United, Doncaster Rovers, Birmingham City, Chesterfield and Burton Albion.

Cook has lined up against him on plenty of occasions throughout the years as a manager and signed him for the Spirerites on loan. The Wigan boss could now look into handing him an opportunity this summer with Duffy set to leave Sheffield United after four years with the Blades.
