Derby County midfielder Omar Mascarell is pushing for his first start for the Rams against Charlton Athletic.
After impressing as the holding midfielder in two substitute appearances, Mascarell is knocking on the door to make his first start for Derby at the Valley on Tuesday evening. The 21-year-old is on loan from Real Madrid and made his two substitute appearances against Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday.
In the game against the Owls, he replaced Will Hughes after an hour and slotted into the holding role in front of the back four, impressing fans and McClaren alike. The head coach told the Derby Evening Telegraph “I think Will has done fantastic
in that position, against Rotherham for an hour and at Carlisle, but we just felt the Sheffield Wednesday game was a little different. It was difficult for him to get into it and control the game like he does and we have options. That is key – and Omar has come in an given us another option.”
Fellow Spaniard Ivan Calero is pushing for a place in the matchday squad. He will again travel with the first-team squad for Tuesday’s game against Charlton Athletic.
Calero, currently playing for Derby’s U21 team, plays as an attacking midfielder and has impressed first-team coach Paul Simpson, who told the Derby Evening Telegraph, “Ivan understands the way we want our wide players to play and he is a really talented footballer. When we saw him in pre-season, we looked and thought two or three months further down the line he might be right for us but he has shown us it might be sooner than that. He is travelling to Charlton, and he may get himself a place on the bench.”
