The first round of this season’s Capital One Cup matched together League One Oldham Athletic and Championship Middlesbrough FC at the newly named SportsDirect.com Park. It was a very typical rainy night in Oldham in which the visitors dominated throughout. Boro looked stronger from the first whistle with good quick passing in midfield as well as pace on the wings. And the visitors dominance paid off when they took the lead after half an hour with a terrific strike from long range by Luke Williams, after the Blues failed to close him down.

In the second half, the visitors again looked the better side and showed it on 50 minuets when Grant Leadbitter was fed the ball just inside the area; slotting home after Oldham failed to clear, making it 2-0 and game over. Middlesbrough always looked more dangerous going forward and they eventually added a third and final goal on the hour mark when substitute Garcia Martinez showed some quick footwork in the box before curling an effort in off the post, beyond goalkeeper Paul Rachubka.

Oldham did add some slight pressure near the end, however it wasn’t enough to gain a goal and Middlesbrough ran out the game comfortably. Oldham will be very disappointed with the result and performance but all looks positive for Middlesbrough. Boro go on to round two, whilst Oldham bow out at the first hurdle.

Oldham Athletic

Paul Rachubka – Couldn’t do too much for any of the goals in fairness, didn’t have many saves too make but came out well when called upon. 5.5
Joe Mills – Didn’t go forward as much as usual, looked very quiet in the first half but improved as the game went on. Subbed. 5.5
Timothee Dieng – Passing was off all game and he looked very poor. Although strong in the air, he looked clueless when on the ball at times. 4.5
James Wilson – Made a few poor mistakes, one leading to a goal. However he did look better in the air and on the ball. 5.5
George Elokobi – Although he showed great strength and effort, passing was very poor throughout. 5.5
Brian Wilson – Got forward a few times but not as much as needed to being a wing back, didn’t do too much wrong but was quiet throughout. 5.5
David Mellor – Had a very poor first half in which, like many of the Blues, his passing and control was poor before he was replaced at half time. 4.5
Liam Kelly – Very disappointing, created few chances and went missing at times. 5.0
Jonson Clarke-Harris – Uncharacteristically quiet, looked uninterested in the first half and was very weak on the ball being pushed off it far too easily. 5.0
Willie Gros – Put himself about a bit in the first half but lacked the final product before he was replaced at half time. 5.5
Danny Philliskirk – Very quiet out on the wing, looked very out of position and reluctant to run at defenders or cut in and shoot. 5.0

Substitutions

Carl Winchester – Looked comfortable on the ball, had a lot more energy and attempted to liven up game but was unsuccessful at times. 6.5
James Dayton – Got down the wing a lot more than Gros and attempted to create chances but didn’t always work. 6.0
Connor Brown – Came on with little time left and it was very hard to make an impact. 5.0

 Middlesbrough

Dimitrious Konstantopolous – Had little to do all game and wasn’t made to make a save but kicking and catching was good. 7.0
James Husband – Solid passing and going forward with very few mistakes. 7.5
Jonathan Woodgate – Good clearances and very strong in the air, dealt very well with the Oldham forwards. 7.5
Daniel Ayala – Marked Strikers out of the game, looked great in the air and confident with the ball 7.5
Seb Hines – Didn’t go forward as much as he could have and too quick to foul wingers cheaply. 6.5
Adam Reach – Very good footwork and picked his pass very well. 7.5
Grant Ledbetter – Good deliveries and passing as well as being very calm on the ball. 7.5
Dean Whitehead – Bossed the midfield, looked very strong and passed well throughout. 7.5
Emilio Nsue – Looked very dangerous when running at the defence with pace but didn’t do it as often as he would have liked. 7.0
Luke Williams – Looked very promising at times as well as scoring a fantastic goal from range. 8.0
Bradley Fewster – Not the best in the air and looked rather quiet in the first half. 6.5

Substitutions

Garcia Martinez – Came on and scored after good footwork and skill. 7.5
Richard Smallwood – Looked comfortable on the ball and passed well after coming on. 7.0
Albert Adomah – Looked very fast and could of caused problems if he attacked more down the wing. 7.0
