‘Players could leave in January,’ warns Huddersfield Town chief

The head of football operations at Huddersfield Town has outlined how the January transfer window could result in even more players leaving the club.

During an interview with BBC Radio Leeds’ West Yorkshire Sports Daily Show, David Webb said the club was “aware” of players who may want to ply their trade in a more prestigious league.

Following the club’s relegation from the Premier League, 14 players left the club with the Terriers initially struggling to find their feet in the Sky Bet Championship before embarking on a much better run of form over the past few weeks.

Now, with the New Year just several weeks away, there may be more squad disruption on the horizon with the potential of more players exiting the club in January.

Webb said: “I think any club that comes down from the Premier League there’s always going to be that transition.

“There’s always going to be that transition of players where players will see themselves and expectations where they might see their career paths or their journey somewhere else, i.e. back to the Premier League or different clubs in the Bundesliga or La Liga et cetera.

“We were aware of that and obviously there could be a situation in January where we look at that into more depth and look at what’s right for the club and for the players, for the individuals, and assess that accordingly.

“I think with all of our players it’s a case by case basis really, so it’s [not about] saying any particular player has to go.

What we’re saying it’s an individual case and in my job you always think about the club’s objectives first and what we need, then obviously look at the players’ objectives and what they need, then we sort of marry the two together and sort of come up with a decision that benefits all.”
