Stevenage ended their nine-year curse of failing to win on opening day thanks to a Chris Whelpdale second half goal. Hartlepool almost scored two minutes into the game but could hit the crossbar. Stevenage had plenty of chances to find the net before Whelpdale secured the win. Hartlepool did have a penalty shout in the dying minutes but it was turned down.
