At the grand old age of 34, Millwall shot stopper David Forde is still one of their most prized assets, and has become a firm fans favourite down at The Den.

Starting his career at Galway United in 1999, Forde worked his way through various different clubs in English football, including West Ham, Luton Town and in Wales with Cardiff City. Forde’s goalkeeping style has never changed. Watching him between the sticks today, you would never guess that he is nearly three and a half decades old. That is the reason I have included him in this list. He is consistent.

In an interview with The Independent, ex-England Goalkeeper, David James, even believes that Forde can go on to become number one at a Premier League club:

“At 34, he still has many years ahead of him. My best year as a player came when I was 36. I had moved to Portsmouth, had been told by (England manager) Steve McClaren that I was no longer his first choice and psychologically the trajectory was downward.

“But, once I got into the environment at Portsmouth, my performances went up and I felt better at 36 than at 26. Fordey just needs one or two very good seasons and he could get the chance to move.”

I agree with Mr James. I believe David Forde has just entered his prime, an opinion backed up well by his recent International career. After Shay Given’s international retirement in 2012, Forde became the oldest Republic of Ireland player to make their debut. But he has retained his place in the team and remains Martin O’Neil’s first choice.

He may well be capable of the Premier League, but for now, Forde remains a Championship veteran, and will continue to shine this coming season.
