Championship weekend preview: Opening day

Millwall v Leeds

A game with that little extra spice to kick off the season as David Hockaday’s men make the trip down to London to play Ian Holloway’s Millwall.

After turning things around last season and securing Championship football for the Lions, Ian Holloway will have hopes of an outside shot at the play-offs if his players can step up to the plate. The signing of Byron Webster from Yeovil after his impressive season in Championship adds defensive strength to Millwall who conceded a shocking 74 goals last season, whilst at the other end of the pitch veteran Ricardo Fuller joins on a free from Blackpool and he still knows how to find the net at this level. It is set to be interesting season at the Den as after such a strong end to the season fans will wonder how far this Millwall side can go.

33713Just when Leeds fans could see light at the end of the tunnel that they have been stuck in for years then they have another turbulent summer. Massimo Cellino is still in the process of sorting out the financial mess of the club, although the reported £11m record transfer fee for Ross McCormack will certainly help the club. The appointment of David Hockaday sent some fans over the edge and despite his unproven record at any level in the Football League it would be harsh to judge him before any competitive games. Signs look good in pre-season and maybe a less well known name is just what Leeds need. With McCormack gone, Matt Smith will have to step up to the plate and find the net more often. The big front man can be a handful although his infamous sending off last year after less than a minute on the pitch last season was one of many low points for Leeds. He is this game’s key man.

Both of these sides will want to get points on the board, but do not expect them to sit back and settle for a 0-0. In a game that could be a little feisty there should be goals.

Score prediction: 1-1 draw
