Sunderland to continue monitoring Peterborough United star

According to a report from Chronicle Live, Sunderland will continue to monitor the situation of Peterborough United star Marcus Maddison, who was heavily linked with a move to the Black Cats in the summer transfer window.

Over the course of the summer, Peterborough United playmaker Marcus Maddison was heavily linked with a move away, but rumours and links failed to develop into a move away from London Road. Since then, Maddison has proved why Posh keeping him has been so crucial for them as they target promotion to the Championship.

The 26-year-old has formed a deadly partnership with strikers Mo Eisa and Ivan Toney, working well in Darren Ferguson’s midfield diamond system. Maddison has scored six goals and provided six assists (Transfermarkt), helping Posh to 3rd in the table.

Now, it has been reported that Sunderland – who were said keen on Maddison in the summer – will continue to monitor his situation. Maddison currently has a £2.5 million release clause but the club are determined to keep him on board this season to help push their promotion charge, with chairman and co-owner Darragh MacAnthony reiterating their standpoint on multiple occasions.

The report from the Chronicle writes that Sunderland could move for Maddison if Posh lower their asking price in January – which seems highly unlikely – or if they can swoop to bring him in on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Posh fans will be hoping that the club can hold on to their creative star in the January window to help their promotion push and will be keeping their fingers crossed that they can potentially persuade Maddison to put pen to paper on a new deal at some point this season, with his deal expiring next summer.
