Ex-Birmingham City, Derby County and Stoke City boss emerges as strong candidate for Millwall

Gary Rowett has emerged as the bookies’ front runner for the Millwall job.

The 45-year-old is currently the 6/4 favourite on SkyBet.

Millwall are in the hunt for a new manager to replace Neil Harris, who left the club last week. Adam Barrett is currently in caretaker charge.

Roy Keane, Chris Hughton and Tim Cahill are other names in the running. However, Rowett leads the way at the moment.

Rowett, who has overseen 337 games during his managerial career, has been available since he was sacked by Championship side Stoke City in January and is eager to return to the game.

He started out as a manager at Burton Albion and he guided the Brewers to the League Two Play-Offs twice in both his first two full seasons at the helm.

Birmingham then plucked him from the fourth tier in October 2014 and appointed him as their boss and he managed to steer them from 21st to 10th in his first campaign. His Blues’ side were then 7th when he was surprisingly sacked in December 2016.

Rowett got back into the dugout with Derby County and spent a year-and-a-half with the Rams, getting them in the Play-Offs in 2018 where they lost to Fulham over two legs.

He left for Stoke City last summer but his time at the bet365 Stadium didn’t work out. Could he get his career back on track at Millwall in the Championship now?
