Peterborough United swoop for highly-rated 18-year-old defender

Peterborough United have confirmed on their official club website that young defender Bobby Copping has joined the club on a two-year deal, having departed Bury upon their expulsion from the Football League.

Peterborough United have moved to bring in 18-year-old defender Bobby Copping on a two-year contract, with the former Bury youngster putting pen to paper on a professional deal with the League One club.

Copping, who has only just turned 18, spent time in the Norwich City youth set-up before leaving the club to link up with Bury. During his time with the Shakers, Copping played for the club’s Under-18s side and upon their expulsion, he spent time with Brighton and Hove Albion, playing once for their Under-23s side.

It is said that he impressed the Premier League side but they opted against bringing him in on a permanent basis as they are happy with the young centre-backs they have at the moment. Now, it is Posh who have moved to bring him in, and manager Darren Ferguson has been speaking upon Copping’s arrival.

Ferguson said:

“We were made aware of him following the unfortunate events at Bury and he became available. Kieran Scarf, our Academy manager, made me aware of him. There has been a lot of interest in him, his agent spoke to Kieran about whether we would be interested. In the meantime, he played a game for Brighton against Chelsea and Brighton were very impressed by him but they have two very good young centre backs as it is already.

“I had a look at the footage and we have decided to sign him. We feel there is a lot of potential there. He has only just turned 18, he is a centre half, good size, was at Norwich as a kid so has a good upbringing and I am delighted to have him on board.

“As a centre half, I have looked at what I have in the first-team squad and what I have below that, it made sense to do this deal because we wanted a young one. We are not going to throw him straight in, we will be patient with him, have a look at him and see how it goes. I have met him and his parents, they are a nice family. He was delighted to sign amidst a lot of interest so I am pleased to get him.”
