Birmingham City’s Croatian midfield maestro is only going to get better says Clotet

Birmingham City manager Pep Clotet has said to Birmingham Live that summer signing Ivan Sunjic is only going to get better and better, having made a strong start to life at St Andrew’s.

22-year-old midfielder Ivan Sunjic has only played eight games for Birmingham City but he is already making a good impression on Blues fans. He opened his account for the club with a great strike from outside the box in a 3-2 loss to Derby County at the weekend, which has prompted manager Pep Clotet to heap praise on the Croatian.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, Clotet has said that he believes Sunjic is only going to get better and better having settled into both English football and the English lifestyle.

Ivan is coping very well,” said Clotet.

“He is a very focused player, very focused on the task and the job and I have the feeling that he has his own routines and own things that he has taken with him to sustain his performances.

“I think he has managed to adapt very well not only to the league but to the country. He speaks good English, like Kristian [Pedersen] – and that helps the players a lot. It is very difficult to adapt to a new place if you don’t speak the language.

“His tactical work was different in his [previous] league. His role here is a little bit different because at Dinamo he could be in front of the centre backs on his own, he has that ability.

“But the Championship the football is very different, sometimes it is not easy to be on your own in front of the centre backs because the game goes round you a lot and turns you around.

“He is playing very well with a partner so that something he has added to his game. It took him very, very few games to get used to the Championship. Obviously he will have very good games and he will have bad games like everyone because we all have bad days.”
