5 of the best opening day fixtures this season

Millwall v Leeds (Championship)

MillwallAfter a summer of change at both The Den and Elland Road, it could really go either way for these two clubs this season. Ian Holloway has made series of shrewd additions to his side with Byron Webster and Matthew Briggs joining too strengthen a defence which leaked 74 goals last season, whilst Magaye Gueye and Ricardo Fuller have been brought it to provide more goals. There’s already quality in the Millwall squad: goalkeeper David Forde seems to get better with age, Mark Beevers and Danny Shittu are more than capable at the back and the midfield is packed with quality but there are questions marks up front as they lack a natural goalscorer. For Leeds, even by their own unpredictable standards, last season was quite remarkable. The sacking of Brian McDermott and the sale of Ross McCormack have left them with problems, namely a lack of stability and a goalscorer. New boss Dave Hockaday will hope new striker Nicky Ajose will provide the goals, whilst the signing of Tommaso Bianchi appears to have gone down well with fans. It’s always set to be a feisty fixture when these two meet (not just on the pitch) and this one is sure to have some extra with it being the first game of the season.

Player to watch out for: Shaun Williams, Millwall – Calm and collected on the ball, Williams fits right in with the way Holloway wants his teams to play and will be invaluable in a game that promises fireworks.

Prediction: Millwall’s style of play, which focuses on ball retention and high pressing, will be too much for Leeds to handle, especially this early on in the season: 1-0.
