Sheffield Wednesday £3m player deal drifting as Celtic redouble efforts

It is that time of the football calendar where club, players and fans are enjoying a little downtime. Maybe ‘enjoying’ and ‘downtime’ are a stretch of the imagination for at least the clubs and the fans.

Whilst players enjoy a well-earned break after a season’s exertions, clubs still need to tick over, targets need to be identified and fans are eagerly awaiting news of incomings and outgoings as sides look to restructure.

Sheffield Wednesday fans are no different, and earlier today they may have been excused in thinking that the restructuring started with news of them usurping Scottish giants Celtic in the race for Motherwell teenager David Turnbull.

This news came from the Scottish Sun who said that talks between the youngster’s representatives and Celtic had broken down amid rumours that personal terms couldn’t be agreed between the two camps.  Rumours going around were that Turnbull wanted around £20,000 a week which is more than some of Celtic’s treble Treble winners earned.

However, the buoyancy that Sheffield Wednesday fans might have felt in this news will have been deflated somewhat by the following tweet from Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Nixon’s tweet more than hints at the fact that Wednesday gave a fight on their hands to land the prolific young midfielder. Based on what the young starlet achieved in his first year, then you can understand why both sides don’t want to let Turnbull get away.

The two-cap Scotland Under-21 international definitely had a season that caught the eye. After a 25-game Premiership particpation, Turnbull had an impressive nine goals and five assists to his name. He was also prolific in Motherwell’s SPL ‘relegation’ round scoring SIX goals in five games and adding an assist to boot.

As it stands, the Owls might be in the driving seat and ready to bid a cool £3m for Turnbull’s services, yet like a dog with a bone Celtic aren’t letting this one get away.
