Wigan Athletic set sights on Liverpool prodigy

Wigan Athletic are interested in landing Liverpool prodigy Ben Woodburn on loan, according to Goal.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly willing to allow the forward to depart on a temporary basis once again, after allowing him to spend time with Sheffield United last season.

The Wales international burst on the scene in 2016, when he became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer. However, injury problems and a lack of action at Bramall Lane have caused the forward to somewhat stagnate.

Another move to the Championship would provide Woodburn with an opportunity to regain form and erase doubts over his future at Anfield.

The Latics will be keen to rebuild after releasing six players last month, one of which was striker James Vaughan. The DW Stadium has proven to be an effective nurturing ground for young talent, recently aiding the development of Brighton & Hove Albion stopper Christian Walton and Chelsea defender Reece James.

Both proved to be excellent servants for Paul Cook’s side, playing crucial roles as Wigan steered clear of relegation in the latter stages of the 2018/19 campaign.

The DW Stadium faithful will be hoping for a similarly impressive contribution from Woodburn, who would arrive with a point to prove. They will certainly be keen for the forward to weigh in with goals, as none of Wigan’s players reached double figures in the scorer charts last season.

The need for a talisman at the club has been made greater by rumours that claim Nick Powell is edging closer to a move to league rivals Stoke City.

The former Manchester United midfielder notched eight league goals in a Wigan shirt last season but is set to don new colours ahead of the new season, making new arrivals a necessity at the DW Stadium.
