Blackburn Rovers still in talks over new midfielder deal as talk of Italian interest persists

Upon the announcement of the club’s retained and released list, Blackburn Rovers confirmed that they were in negotiations with utility man Jack Rodwell over a new deal, with his one-year contract expiring soon.

However, time has passed and Jack Rodwell is still yet to put pen to paper on a new deal with Blackburn Rovers.

Transfer speculation has grown regarding Rodwell, with reports claiming that Italian sides Torino and Sassuolo were interested in the 28-year-old midfielder. Now, Rovers chief executive Steve Waggott has provided an update on contract negotiations with Rodwell.

“There are ongoing discussions. But there has been different information put out,” Waggott said to the Lancashire Telegraph.

“There’s talk of interest in Italy, but there’s nothing conclusive as to whether he’s staying or not. We’ll continue talks to see if we can get to a level where he might want to stay.”

Rodwell is keen to play at a club where he has guaranteed, first-team game time. He only played 22 games across all competitions last season and is hoping that he can feature more next season – regardless of who he is playing for. He was used in a new role under Tony Mowbray, coming in to provide cover at centre-back more often than not, while also playing in his natural role of defensive midfield.

In the summer transfer prior to the arrival of Rodwell, he was heavily linked with a move to the United States, attracting interest from MLS sides while he was still at Sunderland, but it has not been reported that any MLS clubs hold an interest this summer.
