Blackburn Rovers defender set for Doncaster Rovers move

Blackburn Rovers defender Paul Downing is in talks with Doncaster Rovers over a permanent move to the Keepmoat Stadium.

The 27-year-old spent the latter half of this season on loan with Grant McCann’s side and they now want to sign him, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

Downing, who played 22 times for Donny to help them get into the League One Play-Offs, is out-of-contract next month at Ewood Park meaning he can make the move to Yorkshire for free.

Downing joined Blackburn in 2017 initially on loan from MK Dons but the deal was made permanent in January 2018. He helped Tony Mowbray’s side gain promotion from League One in his first season at the club but fell out-of-favour in the Championship in the last campaign, hence why he left on loan in January.

The Somerset-born defender started his career at West Brom and rose up through the youth ranks at the Hawthorns. He never made a senior appearance for the Baggies but did enjoy loan spells at Hereford United, Shrewsbury Town, Rotherham United and Barnet as a youngster.

Downing left West Brom in 2012 to join Walsall, where he went onto play 183 games and score six goals in four seasons.

MK Dons snapped him up in 2016 and he spent a season with them before joining Blackburn. He seems to have found a new home at Doncaster now and they will be hoping to get a deal over the line. Donny are looking to get busy in the transfer window, as reported by The72 earlier today.
