Bristol City set to beat Derby County, Hull City and Reading to League Two playmaker deal

According to The Mirror (via the Derby Telegraph), Bristol City are set to beat fellow Championship sides Derby County, Hull City and Reading to the signature of Colchester United star Sammie Szmodics.

Colchester United star Sammie Szmodics’s strong performances have been catching the attention of a number of Championship sides, with Derby County, Hull City and Reading reportedly interested. But, it is Bristol City who will win the race for Szmodics.

The attacking midfielder netted 15 goals in all competitions for Colchester United last season, providing nine assists along the way as well as they narrowly missed out on a Play-Off spot by just one point.

Szmodics only time away from Colchester came on a brief loan spell with non-league side Braintree Town. Other than that, he has spent his entire career with the club. He broke through the club’s youth academy, making his way through the youth ranks and into the first-team. In total, he has notched up 162 appearances for the club, scoring 38 goals and providing 16 assists along the way (Transfermarkt).

He has played most of his football in League Two, making 99 appearances in the division, also playing 43 times in League One. Now, the 23-year-old is keen to make a step up the football league ladder and test himself in the Championship.

His contract with Colchester runs out at the end of the season and the Robins look set to swoop for a bargain deal to provide another option in the attacking midfield role. Bristol City have already been involved in transfer action, with left-back Lloyd Kelly making a big money move to Bournemouth, and his transfer seems set to finance some new incomings at Ashton Gate.
