Wigan Athletic in talks to sign Benfica defender

Wigan Athletic are in talks to sign Benfica’s Alex Pinto according to a report from Portuguese publication Record via Sports Witness.

This season, the Latics have had a star player at right-back. They loaned in Reece James from Chelsea and he was far better than anyone could have expected. While he did play in midfield at times, it was at right-back where he showed himself to be a star in the making and despite him being very young, he was definitely one of the best in the position in the league. However, it appears that he won’t be at Wigan next season. Chelsea need all the players they can get because of their transfer embargo and James may be fighting for a spot in their first team next year.

This means that Wigan need a new right-back going into next season and they are moving quickly to get him. The club are already in talks with a right-back and again they are going for a player not many will know in this country. They are interested in signing Pinto, a 20-year-old defender currently playing for Benfica. He has been in their B team for the last two years and has made 33 appearances for them.

But this report indicates that Benfica aren’t trying very hard to keep the defender so it seems like WIgan will have a good shot at getting him. There is some whispers about some unnamed competition also being interested in Pinto but at the moment, it seems like he might be switching Lisbon for Lancashire.
