Top 50 Players of the EFL – 44th: Semi Ajayi (Rotherham United)

Rotherham United midfielder Semi Ajayi has been voted by you as the 44th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Ajayi is the 44th best player in the Football League. This is the first time that he has been on the Top 50 Players countdown.

It’s fair to say that Ajayi has been through a lot while at Rotherham. He initially signed on loan from Cardiff City in 2017 and that was the Millers side that were just miserable to watch. They were rightly relegated and finished at the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship. However Ajayi was liked by the team and he liked them back so he made the deal permanent in the summer. That’s when he came into his own and was one of their best defenders as they immediately returned to the Championship thanks to their play-off success.

While Ajayi was a great defender for Rotherham, he was asked to undertake a different challenge this season. He was moved to defensive midfield and that turned out to be an amazing move for him. It unleashed Ajayi’s goalscoring ability, something that no one realised he had until this season. He scored eight goals in 51 appearances, an unprecedented amount for him. It wasn’t enough though to keep Rotherham in the Championship and it may be the case he now moves to stay in the division.
