Funnily enough, Middlesbrough were strong favourites for promotion at the beginning of Strachan’s reign but it failed and ended in a damp squib with Middlesbrough missing out on any challenge. Since then, a lower budget and a general stale feeling about the club has plighted each manager.

The feel good factor has returned to the Riverside now after supporters witnessed an impressive end to last season. Combined with the current investment of fresh new faces coming into the squad, optimism is returning for the Smoggies. The team is built for the battle of attrition that is the second division and they should, going by pre-season, be ready to fire on all cylinders when the real football begins next weekend.

Middlesbrough fans truly believe they are a premier league team. After 5 seasons of championship football it is certainly time for the club to return to “where they belong” before that old adage becomes something of an exhausted witticism.
