Steve Bruce hails Sheffield Wednesday’s “best display” against Brentford

Steve Bruce was full of praise for his Sheffield Wednesday side after beating Brentford 2-0 at Hillsborough.

In-form striker Steven Fletched bagged two goals for the Owls to sink the Bees.

Bruce, who’s side face bitter rivals Sheffield United next Monday, said last night to the Owls’ official club website: “That was the best display in my short time here so far. The players showed terrific energy levels, they pressed high and Brentford couldn’t play their passing game”.

We know they like to play out from the back so we didn’t want them to settle and it worked well. That allowed us to take control of the game and we got the goals through big Fletch that we deserved. I don’t want to be greedy because I’ll take a 2-0 but I think on another day we could have had more”

However, Bruce was disappointed with an injury to new loan signing Achraf Lazaar : “That’s the real negative for me tonight and I feel for the lad. He’s been beaming since Saturday when he had such a terrific debut. He hasn’t played much football so the question was, ‘could he play two games in a few days?’ I think with hindsight I might have played it differently.”

He was pleased with the performance of double goal scorer Steven Fletcher: “He’s in great nick and he’s scoring too and the way he led the line, his work rate, his effort and of course a textbook header, a great finish – it’s difficult to pick individuals but he scored two and did fantastically well”
