Leeds United agree to send full-back on loan to League One side

Leeds United have extended the loan deal of full-back Lewie Coyle, which will see him spend the rest of the season with League One side Fleetwood Town after impressing under Joey Barton.

Fleetwood Town have announced that Leeds United defender Lewie Coyle has extended his loan spell at Highbury Stadium once again, after playing a big part in the Cod Army’s first half of the season

The deal sees the defender extend his second spell at Fleetwood Town to the end of the season, after he enjoyed a successful spell at Highbury Stadium last season. Now, under new manager Joey Barton, Coyle has impressed once again. He has missed only one league game for Barton’s side this season, playing all 90 minutes in 24 of his 25 League One appearances this season.

Rumours spread in late December regarding a possible return to Elland Road for the full-back, with Marcelo Bielsa struggling with injuries in the defensive department throughout the first half of this season. Luke Ayling endured an extended spell on the sidelines with a knee injury and Gaetano Berardi is still out with a torn hamstring.

However, Bielsa opted to utilize youngster Jamie Shackleton and versatile winger Stuart Dallas in the full-back positions, allowing Coyle to stay at Fleetwood.

Coyle first broke into the Leeds United first team in 2015 under Steve Evans, featuring regularly for The Whites in the second half of the 2015/16 Championship season. However, he fell out of favour and made only four appearances in the next season.

Since joining Fleetwood on loan in the summer of 2017, Coyle has gone on to play 76 games for Fleetwood Town over the course of a season and a half.
