Birmingham City sign Denny Johnstone

Birmingham City have signed striker Denny Johnstone from Celtic after compensation was agreed between the two clubs.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Blues boss Lee Clarke felt that the deal wouldn’t go through as the club couldn’t come up with the cash and had offered the Glaswegian club a large sell-on clause if they reduced the initial fee. However, Birmingham City’s hierarchy had a change of heart and have come to a compromise with Celtic to get the 19-year-old through the door.

Blues fans will have former Celtic first team coach and now Birmingham City’s under-21’s/development coach Alan Thompson to thank for the tip about Johnstone as the club managed to get a head start on the other clubs. The highly-rated teenager had been offered a new deal at Celtic Park, as well as attracting numerous other suitors including Ajax but the Blues have beaten them all to his signature with Johnstone signing a three-year contract.
