6 of the best hat-tricks in The Football League

Grant Holt and Simeon Jackson – Norwich 6 – 0 Scunthorpe (2/4/11)

holtHat-tricks aren’t something you see every day in the Football League, but when you see two in the same game you know you’ve just witnessed something special.

That was the case when Norwich played host to Scunthorpe in the Championship in April 2011 as Simeon Jackson and Grant Holt got three goals apiece for the Canaries. Both teams were on their way out of the division but at opposite ends as Norwich earned promotion to the Premier League whilst Scunny were unable to stave off relegation.

This was Alan Knill’s first match in charge of the Iron, but even he couldn’t have seen the goal glut that was to happen that afternoon at Carrow Road. Holt stole in at the near post to grab his first after ten minutes, and then converted a penalty to double his own and Norwich’s tally. It wasn’t until the hour mark that Holt completed his scoring with a trademark header – but that was only half the story….

Whatever Holt could do Jackson could do just as well, and after coming on as a substitute he stole the ball away from the defender to score one on one with the ‘keeper to notch his first. Just two minutes later he buried his second from close range to make it five for the Canaries. It wasn’t until the dying seconds of the game that Jackson got his third to round off the scoring.

For the record, Clayton Donaldson and Joel Grant did the same in Crewe’s 8-1 demolition of Cheltenham on the same day. Meaning there was more than one argument for the match ball that evening.
