Aston Villa linked with move for highly-rated Sheffield Wednesday full-back

Aston Villa could consider making a move for highly-rated Sheffield Wednesday full-back Matt Penney according to Birmingham Live.

The 20-year-old Chesterfield-born left-back is one of the most talented young stars to come out of the Sheffield Wednesday academy in recent times and several clubs are thought to be watching the player.

The Owls are said to be keen to hold onto Penney and are ready to offer the player a bumper new deal to extend his stay at Hillsborough, however, the likes of Aston Villa, AFC Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion are all thought to be ready to make moves for the defender.

Penney has made 10 first team appearances for Wednesday so far this season after being handed his senior debut for The Owls in the 2-0 Carabao Cup win at Sunderland in August. The player was fielded against Aston Villa in September as Wednesday won 2-1 at Villa Park and it is believed that Penney made a positive impression upon officials of his side’s opponents.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Penney for their academy in 2006 and the player has successfully graduated to the first team. The youngster has spent time on loan at both Bradford City and Mansfield Town in recent seasons, although he was offered little game time by either of those clubs.
