New favourite emerges for the vacant Macclesfield Town job

Jay Saunders has emerged as the 6/4 favourite for the Macclesfield Town job on SkyBet.

The League Two side are in the hunt for a new manager after sacking Mark Yates yesterday following a disastrous start to the season. The Silkmen are currently rock bottom of the Football League and have not won a game yet in this campaign.

Macclesfield surprised everyone last season when they won the National League title and earned promotion to League Two. However, their long-serving manager, John Askey, left the club in the summer to take over Shrewsbury Town.

The Silkmen opted for former Cheltenham Town, Crawley Town and Solihull Moors boss Mark Yates but that appointment has not worked out. The now-favourite for the job, Jay Saunders, was in fact linked with the position after Askey’s departure.

Saunders is now available after parting company with National League side Maidstone United at the end of August. The 39 year-old had been in charge of the non-league outfit for seven years and could be handed a route into the Football League by Macclesfield now.

Midfielder Danny Whittaker and assistant manager Neil Howarth have been placed in caretaker charge whilst a successor for Yates is found. Macclesfield face Accrington Stanley away tonight in the Football League Trophy and then travel to Tranmere Rovers on Friday.

Other names have been linked with the Silkmen job as well as Saunders. Here is a look at five early potential candidates for the role, as reported by The72 following Yates’ departure from the Moss Rose.
