According to Sun reporter Alan Nixon on Twitter (below), Aston Villa are one of three Championship sides showing an interest in Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna, with Swansea and Norwich being the other two.

However, it won’t be easy for the Championship trio as they’ll face competition in Premier League side Wolves if they hope to land the 21-year-old Scottish international in January.

McKenna, who has been at Aberdeen since signing as a youngster in 2008, has progressed through the age groups at the club, whilst also seeing time out on loan at Ayr United and Alloa Athletic. The 6ft 2″ centre-back’s consistent performances have led to the interest of the aforementioned English sides, as well as interest from the domestic Scottish market as well.

According to a report from the Evening Express from early September, Aberdeen turned down a £3.5million approach from SPL giants Celtic. Villa’s interest, as noted above, comes after a £7million offer from the Midlands club was turned down on deadline day.

Yet, Don’s boss Derek McInnes is quoted in the same article as almost accepting that the rated youngster will move on from the club. McKenna is contracted to Aberdeen until 2023, but McInnes feels that the right bid, received early enough, will see the young defender leave for pastures new.

On that point he said: “If the January window comes in and there is an offer that gives us a wee bit more assurances on the figure and certainly more time to react to it – whether it is January, next summer or beyond – McKenna will move from here and go on to represent Aberdeen and Scotland in the future very, very well.”

Villa would definitely benefit from McInnes joining them, what with them laying in 15th in the Championship table. Norwich (5th) and Swansea (7th) sit better off in the grand scheme of things, yet they too would benefit from bringing in a youngster who would add to their squads.
